EEEPC and the Keyboard..XP..Battery…Ubuntu & more

Okay I love the concept on the EEEPC. ASUS’s first foray into the low budget laptop market. In fact I think the PC is a fun plaything but…….

There are some huge concerns to address

First of all…

The battery when I had the pre installed linux installed there were ton of quircks that drove me nuts. The battery would drain whether the unit was on or not. I mean I had to take the battery off the unit if I wanted to use it on any kind of trip, whether it was long or short. I soon found out that would be fixed when I installed XP, however well cover the XP issues it their entirety in a little while.

The next issue I had is that I could never get the wireless internet connection to remember the settings I had to maually enter them every time…I mean every time so sooon as I tried to use it at home on my wireless network once again I would have to enter the code. It really was very annoying.

I called ASUS for guidance, and I soon learned the EEEPC was the ugly step child of the division. Support’s only answer was send it back the unit must be defective. No one at ASUS had a clue, They were polite but could care less.

No big deal all stated issues were fixed when I installed XP. The battery issues and the Wireless internet issues were fixed 1..2..3. But another problem arose XP ate almost all of the 4gb of the SSD Drive. That means loading Open Office or anything else would be a nightmare. I tried using Nlite but could never find the right configuration to make it workable.

Next I tried UBUNTU but could not get the drivers to work, I than found a EEEPC Ubuntu specific version, the drivers worked but than something else would not work I love the idea of Ubunto, however Im’ a base techy most of the stuff being described in the help forums was way over my head.

I cancelled the ubuntu experiment and moved back to XP I added a 16 gb card to the sd slot. The 16gb card allowed me to add music & movies it did not fix the OS issues.

Because I travel alot and I have to file a lot of reports I found that keyboard was very small and uncomfortable to be useful. Im 5,7 trust me if Im complaining it’s a big issue.

I know I have complained a lot about the EEEPC it is a fun play around unit but it has a lot to grow. If you view it as a toy you won’t be dissapointed anything more than that and you will be very dissappointed.

I hope to try the Mini-Note soon
